TLI hosts former Ukrainian president, first lady at summer social

PROVO -- Guests at this year's annual summer social had the unique opportunity to meet two historic figures in Ukrainian politics. Viktor Yushchenko, former president of Ukraine, and his wife, Kateryna, appeared as distinguished guests at the yearly gathering. More than 150 people attended the July 30 event, sponsored by The Leavitt Institute for International Development. Guests took part in a buffet dinner, a photo opportunity with the Yushchenko's, and a program. The guest list included lawyers, judges, business leaders, and other professionals with a strong interest in TLI.

"We hosted an impressive group of people at the social, and to have the Yushchenko's there was an incredible experience," said Chelom Leavitt, TLI executive director. "Their place in history and their accomplishments match up perfectly with what TLI is trying to do in Ukraine and around the world."

Mr. Yushchenko attracted worldwide attention as the leader of the 2004 Orange Revolution in Ukraine. He called his fellow citizens to protest rigged election results in which he had been declared the loser against a candidate supported by the outgoing administration. Millions of people rallied, leading the Ukrainian Supreme Court to overturn the results and order new elections. Under international election monitors, Mr. Yushchenko won and was inaugurated president in January 2005. He served until 2010.

At the social, Mr. Yushchenko shared his feelings about democracy and freedom, and he offered his insights into Ukraine's progress toward reform. He also answered questions about his service as president. Mrs. Yushchenko praised the work of TLI and thanked those in attendance for supporting its mission of democratic reform.

"This was truly a perfect evening," said David Leavitt, TLI board president. "The Yushchenko's delivered inspiring words, and the guests were reminded of the magnitude of the work we are engaged in. Together, we really can change the world, step by step."

TLI "TLI has afforded me more than just an opportunity of practicing in court. It enabled me to perceive and better understand the principles that are fundamental not only for the legal system which has such an institute as jury trial, but also for every legal system that aims to be effective and fair."
