Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Red University)Kyiv, Ukraine![]() Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University is a higher educational institution which trains specialists in many fields of knowledge and undertakes research. Although this description can be applied to any other institution of a similar kind, Taras Shevchenko University enjoys a special status among the establishments of higher learning in Ukraine. It is the number one Ukrainian University, and a major centre of advanced learning and progressive thinking. It ranks high among the universities of the world. It consists of more faculties and departments than any other Ukrainian educational institution and provides training of specialists in a greater number of fields and in a better way than any other comparable establishment. Its reputation transcends the boundaries of Ukraine. Since the time of its foundation in 1834, the University has been generating progressive ideas, shaping Ukrainian intellect, and providing champions of national liberation activity in Ukraine. It has always upheld the Ukrainian freedom-loving spirit. Kyiv University dates back to the first part of the 17th century. The Kyiv Mohyla Academy, founded in 1632, provided the foundation upon which Kyiv University was subsequently built.. Pressure on the authorities to allow the creation of such an institution was growing but it took many decades before this idea was realised. The Russian autocracy feared that it would turn into a centre of Ukrainian national liberation activity, and one must say that such fears were not groundless. Kyiv University did become a focal point of national consciousness. With Ukraine's independence and changing circumstances, the University was confronted with new objectives and requirements. It is contributing to the all-Ukrainian effort to create a radically new political, social and economic structure in the country. Kyiv University seeks to improve its system of training specialists since its graduates are to work in various sectors of the political, social and economic system of independent Ukraine. Kyiv University graduates are expected to be highly qualified, patriotic and aware of the tasks facing the new Ukraine; they must be open to national ideals and feel responsible for what they are required to do; they are expected to be able to demonstrate a creative approach in solving the urgent issues of today and tomorrow, and to think in terms of long-term and wide-ranging reforms. Law Faculty of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University is one of the oldest institutions of legal learning in Ukraine. Studies at the faculty began in 1835. Graduates of the Law Faculty work in courts, procuracy, notary offices, in the Verkhovna Rada committees, in the Constitutional Court of Ukraine (three Heads of Departments of the Law Faculty were appointed judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine). Scholars of its nine departments play an active role in law drafting and summarizing judicial practice. The university is named after Taras Shevchenko, a major figure in Ukrainian arts. Its reputation transcends the boundaries of Ukraine. Since the time of its foundation, 160 years ago, the University has been generating progressive ideas, shaping the Ukrainian intellect, and providing champions of national liberation in Ukraine. L'viv, Ukraine
National Aviation UniversityKyiv, Ukraine![]() The National Aviation University was founded in 1933 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Over the years, the National Aviation University has come a long historical path. During this time, it has prepared more than 150,000 undergraduates and post-graduates, which now hold diplomas from the university. Currently, about 25,000 students study at the University. The educational process is carried out by the highly-skilled scientific and pedagogical teams, which include 6 academicians and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 150 Doctors of Sciences and professors, and more than 500 Candidates of Sciences and senior lecturers. The teaching staff also includes 17 Honoured figures of science and engineering of Ukraine and 25 winners of the State prizes. Throughout every branch of the University, there are leading experts are involved in the educational process. The National Aviation University is one of the three premiere universities in Kyiv that has a relationship with the Leavitt Institute for International Development.
Ivan Franko National University of L'vivL'viv, Ukraine![]() The L'viv University or officially the Ivan Franko National University of L'viv was founded in 1661 and is the oldest continuously operating university in Ukraine. It is located in the historic city of L'viv in L'viv Oblast of western Ukraine. It has a beautiful campus nestled just north of the Carpathian Mountains. The overall number of full-time students enrolled at the university is 9,384 and those studying by correspondence number 3,466. A complete course of studies at the university lasts five years and over two thousand students graduate from the university annually. L'viv University has been expanding its ties with the higher schools of Hungary, Germany, USA, Canada, France, Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, Russia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Portugal, Roumania, Moldova. The Law School at the L'viv Ivan Franko National University was established under the Cabinet of Ministers on 29 May 1997. The main task of its legal education is to train highly qualified lawyers who have the maturity of mind, independence to the community and to their own conscience, a sense of patriotism and justice, and the constant striving for new knowledge. This is the content and nature of training of its law students. The Ivan Franko National University is the newest university to partner with the Leavitt Institute of International Development and will be a key to TLI's plans to spread throughout Western Ukraine.
Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National UniversityChernivtsi, Ukraine![]() The Chernivtsi University is the leading Ukrainian institution for higher education in Northern Bukovina area of Ukraine. It is located in Chernivtsi, a city in the south-west of Ukraine, at the hills of the Carpathian Mountains. The University was founded as a "Franz-Josefs Universität" in 1875 as the Czernowitz Higher Theological School as part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The primary, beautiful red building of the University dates from 1920, and was commissioned by the Romanian government. In 1989 the University was named to honor Yuriy Fedkovych, a prominent Ukrainian writer, a native of Bukovina. In 2000, the University was awarded the National status and by decision of the Session of Council of European University Association, held in Brussels on January 15th, 2009, Yuri Fedkovich Chernivtsi National University was granted a full individual membership in European University Association. The law school of Chernivtsi University was founded in 1875. It boasts five full-time professors, thirty-six associate professors, twenty-nine assistant professors, and twenty-two assistants. The law school's intensive growth has been caused by its sound doctorate and postgraduate study programs. It has its own codification and criminology laboratories, computer lab, Internet center, European Studies Center, Students' Law Clinic, and Yevhen Erlih Student Scientific Society. The University's research library receives about 50 reviews in jurisprudence, legal science, and educational literature. The College is proud of its "Unified Graduates' Data Bank", according to which 80 MA graduates (among 94) do the scientific work in jurisprudence, specialized higher educational institutions of different accreditation levels, and different levels of business. 758 Specialist graduates are employed in various law colleges and schools as state prosecutors, courts, banks, other companies and organizations. Chernivtsi University was the Leavitt Institute for International Development's first partner university in Western Ukraine. It has become one of the highlights of most TLI visiting teachers and a great friend to the institute.
V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National UniversityKharkiv, Ukraine![]() The Kharkiv National University is located in the city of Kharkiv and is one of the major universities in Ukraine. Earlier it played a significant role in higher education in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. It was founded in 1805 through the efforts of Vasyl Karazin (after whom the university is now named) becoming the second oldest university in Ukraine after the University of Lviv. In 1999, Kharkiv University was granted national university status. Today it has 17 faculties: mechanics-mathematics, physics, radio-physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, geology-geography, economics, sociology, history, philology, philosophy, law, fundamental medicine, foreign languages, international education, and post-diploma education. It also has a graduate school, evening school, and correspondence courses. There are 4 research institutes, dozens of laboratories, an astronomical observatory, a botanical garden, 4 museums, a central library, and 50 departmental libraries. Its enrollment is over 12,000 students and there are about 1,500 members of the university's faculty. Kharkiv University is associated with the first Ukrainian newspapers and journals and the first scientific societies. Since its foundation, the University has graduated over 130,000 students. The University also initiated the whole system of higher education of the Kharkiv Region. Even the National Academy of Law was an offshoot from Kharkiv University. Kharkiv University School of Law traces its history back to 1804, when the Section of Moral and Political Sciences was founded and later obtained the status of a University School. It trains highly qualified lawyers to provide legal support for Ukrainian statehood, fundamental legislative and judicial reforms, intensified judicial protection of civil rights and freedoms, and crime control. The rebirth of the School within the walls of one of the oldest universities of Eastern Europe was urged by the necessity to renew the structure of a classical university and to provides qualified jurists for various state, public and law enforcement agencies. The School provides full-time and part-time training in Law both for state budget and contract students. The students are licensed as bachelors (4-year deree program) and specialists (5-year degree programs) The law school focuses its research on: supremacy of law as the legal foundation of the state and the civil society; urgent issues of justice, strengthening legality and combating criminality; law of the European Union; copyright law; protecting intellectual property; problems of the penitentiary system; and structure of law enforcement agencies and courts Ukraine. The School also introduces new qualifications depending on the demand in various areas of legal practice; develops international cooperation; designs new content of legal subjects taught at universities; and updates the content of legal subjects in a new generation of textbooks, guidelines, methodological and information means of training.
